Shore Medical Center welcomed its first baby of 2018 at 3:27 a.m. Jan. 1 when Kristin Lane and Brian Sterback of Linwood welcomed their daughter, Hazel Sterback. She was 7 pounds, 4 ounces and was 20.5 inches long.

Hazel is the first child for Kristin and Brian, who said, “We would like to thank our doctors, Dr. Librizzi of Virtua, Dr. Morgan of Atlantic Cape OB/GYN and Dr. Milio at Shore Medical Center. The excellent nurses at Shore, and all of the staff here, made our experience unforgettable.”

Funny Farm Rescue founder

MAYS LANDING - Laurie Zaleski, founder of the Funny Farm Rescue, a nonprofit animal rescue, and illustrator of “Farley the Funny Farm Dog” will visit Hamilton Mall at 4403 Black Horse Pike to read the story to the kids club from 2 to 4 p.m. Jan. 15.

Farley the Funny Farm Dog, Stinky the Friendly Skunk and Chuck the Miracle Dog will join Zaleski for the presentation.

Following the presentation, Zaleski and Farley will sign copies of the books. Books will be available for purchase for $12 and 100 percent of the purchase price will be used to feed and care for the more than 550 animals that live at the Funny Farm at 6908 Railroad Blvd.

MAYS LANDING - Time is running out to register for spring classes at the Academy of Culinary Arts at Atlantic Cape Community College, ranked by Best Choice Schools as the No. 1 culinary school in New Jersey. Spring classes begin Jan. 16.

New this year, the first 10 new full-time students who have paid in full for the spring semester at the academy will receive a free knife kit from Follett Book Store, valued at $250. To be eligible, you must begin the spring semester with at least 12 credits. An award letter will be sent to selected students.

The academy offers two-year degree programs in culinary arts, baking and pastry, and food service management, and specialization programs in hot foods, baking and pastry, food service management and catering.

The academy also offers two one-year certificate programs, Baking and Pastry Certificate I and Culinary Arts Certificate I. These two-semester certificates are designed to provide students with career training for entry-level positions in the baking and pastry or culinary fields. The certificates can also be used as a foundation for completing an associate degree at the Academy of Culinary Arts.

ACA students have many opportunities to gain hands-on experience throughout the year.

Full-time classes meet five hours per day, Monday through Friday, in morning or afternoon sessions.

Atlantic County honoring

life and legacy of Dr. King

ATLANTIC CITY - Atlantic County will honor the life and legacy of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. at its 31st annual birthday commemoration. The ceremony will feature the presentation of the Community Spirit awards to two outstanding residents who exemplify his principles through their involvement in the community and their efforts to improve the lives of their fellow citizens.

This year’s honorees are Atlantic City residents Shermaine Gunter-Gary and Michael A. Bailey. They will be recognized at 11 a.m. Jan. 12 at the county office building at 1333 Atlantic Ave.

“Shermaine and Michael are passionate advocates for our youth and are dedicated to improving their lives through education, recreation, mentoring and empowerment,” said County Executive Dennis Levinson. “Their efforts have made a difference in our community. They unselfishly lead by example.”

Gunter-Gary is the founder and executive director of the Atlantic Council of Youth Programs, Inc. that includes the Rites of Passage programs, the Atlantic City Theater Guild, the Youth Entrepreneur program and the William J. Porter II Memorial Basketball League. She is also the chief executive officer of Empowerment Tools Coalition, Inc. She has been a member of the Salvation Army’s advisory board for more than 15 years. Gunter-Gary has also served on more than 30 boards throughout the state and has been appointed to several blue ribbon committees.

Bailey is the former executive director of the Atlantic City Police Athletic League where he was employed for 34 years, and he currently leads the PAL’s male mentor program for youth ages 8 to 17. A licensed minister, Bailey hosts a weekly gospel radio program. He previously served 24 years as the head coach of the Atlantic City Dolphins Junior football team as well as the executive director of Atlantic City’s recreation department. He is an accomplished vocalist, choir director, playwright and producer.

The keynote address will be presented by Rev. Collins A. Days Sr., a 2014 MLK Community Spirit Award recipient and pastor of Second Baptist Church in Atlantic City.

ACUA hosting environmental

stewards training

EGG HARBOR TOWNSHIP - Atlantic County Utilities Authority, 6700 Delilah Road, will host the Rutgers Environmental Stewards Training beginning Jan. 24. Classes will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Wednesdays.

The program educates the public about the science behind pressing environmental issues and helps participants create positive change in their communities. Weekly classes focus on a wide variety of topics including climate change, soil health, energy, waste management, water resource protection, invasive species management and habitat conservation. Students also learn about conflict resolution and leadership. Optional field trips to environmentally significant sites around the state are included as part of the program.

Anyone can become an Environmental Steward. The program introduces non-scientists to the science underlying key environmental issues in our region. Leading authorities from academia are joined by leaders from environmental and non-profit organizations to share information and insights with the Stewards and help them make a difference in their own communities.

“Stewards have used this training as a stepping stone for further involvement in environmental work in their community,” said Pat Rector, state coordinator for the Environmental Steward Program. “Close to 40 percent of our alumni serve on a local board or commission and for many, that service is a direct result of having participated in our program.”

In order to become a certified Environmental Steward, graduates of the class portion of the program complete a 60-hour volunteer internship of their choosing. Internships are unique and intended to align with the passion of the individual, the needs of the program, and the community.

‘Little Women: The Musical’

HAMMONTON - Eagle Theatre’s production of Louisa May Alcott’s classic universal coming of age story, “Little Women: The Musical” opens on Jan. 24 at the theater at 208 Vine St.

The Civil War story that swept the nation is brought to life in this new musical phenomenon. Academy of Culinary Arts offering noncredit training programs

ATLANTIC CITY - The Academy of Culinary Arts will offer two four-month noncredit training programs at Atlantic Cape Community College’s Charles D. Worthington Atlantic City Campus, 1535 Bacharach Blvd. The Culinary Training Program and the Baking and Pastry Training Program will both begin Feb. 12. Classes will meet from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Learn the skills you need to start a career with confidence as a cook, pastry cook or baker in just 17 weeks, at a lower cost than other local culinary training options. All students earn ServSafe certification and learn interview skills. A job fair at the end of training is scheduled for quick entry into the field.

The Culinary Training Program provides an overview of basic culinary terminology and skills; pantry production; the use and benefits of kitchen gardens; hot food production and short order cooking; preparation of stocks and sauces; cooking methods of meat, poultry and seafood; and the fundamentals of baking.

The Baking and Pastry Training Program covers basic culinary terminology and skills as they apply to the bakeshop; organization and scaling as it pertains to production of bread; leavening agents; proper mixing methods for crusts and cookies; cake decorating; plated desserts as well as chocolate and sugar work.
